A Two-Day
National Seminar on
Contemporary Indian Women Novelists in English
25-26 March 2009
Women writers have been flourishing in the genre of fiction right from late 18th century with Toru Dutt, Krupabai Satthianadhan and Shevantibai M. Nikambe to the present novelists such as Shashi Deshpande, Manju Kapur, Jaisree Misra and Kiran Desai to mention only a few. Some of these novelists are becoming bestsellers all over the world. There has been a lot of research on the women writers either on the independent authors or on the group of authors or on the theoretical framework.
However, this seminar will try to explore all the canonized and non-canonized texts starting from 2000 onwards as the publication cut off date and authors of the contemporary women novelists and makes an attempt to bring them for a discussion and also let the literary world know about the novelists who may have been budding or otherwise.
The broad themes could be:
*Inter-link between marriage and career
*Dependence on friends, relatives, neighbours and largely on society
*Independence of women in life/Individuality in women’s life
*New challenges posed by women to the society
*Education a wide window and broad weapon for women
*Divorce and Remarriage: No longer a taboo
*Shared family responsibility of couples
*Unmarried women with no regrets
*Change in sexual attitude/notions
Call for Papers:
Papers are invited from the teachers, research scholars and post graduate students to share their views and strengthen the efforts of the seminar. It is a promise to all the paper readers that the papers presented will be brought out in the form of a book.
